UPDATE: As of 10pm PDT Friday, the US Coast Guard says it has safely recovered the two children and taken their father into custody off Monterey. ////
A Hunter 41 sailboat that went missing Tuesday from Club Nautique in Alameda has reportedly been spotted off the San Mateo Coast by a commercial fisherman.
The San Jose Mercury News and San Francisco Chronicle report the fisherman spotted the “Unleashed” about 0400 Friday approximately 50 miles off Pillar Point. The Merc says authorities managed to fax or email a photo of 43-year old Christopher Maffei and his two children, 3-year old Brooklynn and 2-year old Devin, the fisherman says he saw Maffei and Brooklynn on board.
According to the Chron, the fisherman spoke with Maffei, and Maffei asked if he could buy some fuel. The fisherman says he refused.
The Chron says the “Unleashed” is heading back toward the coast, they are keeping tabs on her, and won’t try to board until the boat returns to shore.
Police say Maffei took his children from their mother’s home in South San Francisco on Tuesday before allegedly stealing the “Unleashed”.
